Operative Versus Non-Operative Treatment of the Isolated Medical Collateral Ligament Injury of the Knee
Schech, Joseph M.

Abstract
Conservative treatment for the isolated medial collateral ligament injury is update trend. From June. 1984 to November 1991. 158 patients(159 cases) who had ligament injuries, included medial collateral ligament, were follow up. Among them, 69
pateints
(70 cases) had isolated medial collateral ligament injury but 55 patients (56 cases) of them was followed up over 1 year. They were treated by either conservative or a surgical regiment. Our purpose is to compare the results of conservatevely
treated
group (Group II 38 cases) to surgically treated group (Group I 18 cases). The periods of follow-up was 12 months in minimum and 35 months in maximum. Injuries to medial collateral ligaments could not benefit from surgical treatment because the
results
were good in both treatment groups. The key success in the conservative treatment of this injury is to establish that there is an isolated lesion with no associatd damage to other structures of the knee.
By Marshall¢¥s criteria, In Group I, the result were 14 were good, 3 fair, 1 poor and In group II, 31 good, 6 fair, 1 poor. Especially, in grade 3 instability, the results were 12 good (Group I), 10 good (Group II), That is, 75%, 76%.
In conclusion, conservative treatment was preferable method to the oeprative treatment to isolated medial collateral ligament injury, especially grade 3 instability injury.
